Wasa Winter Festival a perfect day

By Krista Nebloch

Wasa Winter Festival 2015 was a huge success and a whole lot of fun!

Presented by the Wasa Lions, attendance doubled at least this year and by all reports and comments we received, people really are enjoying this family friendly event.

I loved watching people reconnect and catch up by the bon fires as our little community has full time residents and part time ones too. Together we are Wasa and that’s a beautiful thing and I am extremely proud to be a part of it!

The Fort Steele Clydesdales were a new addition this year. Such beautiful big beasts they are.

I realized this when I went to pet a horse and my hand froze. That’s one big horse!

Then I looked down and beside me was a little guy reaching up with no fear to pet them.

Huge and gentle too! The Clydes pulled the heritage sleigh through the fields for sleigh rides much to the delight of the riders.

The ladies from the Fort Steele Bakery, which is open and baking up a storm all winter this year, brought fresh-from-the-oven-that-morning cinnamon buns and breads.

They sold out! Three big cheers for Ft. Steele for joining us in this community event and others in the future!

Snow piles were well used by the kids. Go figure; pile up a bunch of snow and kids can entertain themselves for hours!

This is something I take great delight in seeing with our tech crazy society.

The rinks were both very well used with hockey on the big rink and players of all ages, sizes and skills played together.

The family rink had ice jug curling fun, complete with proper curling circles and learning to skate for those still a little shaky on the blades.

Kudos to resident rink rat J.C., aka The Iceman, for maintaining the ice again this year.

And of course my favourite, bannock made fresh all day and steaming and crispy and yummy by the lovely ladies who know their bannock.

Gwinners Butcher donated smokies and hot dogs again this year. YUMMO! We were well fed, happy and rosy cheeked by the end of the festival.

Even the busy-nosed dogs were smiling!

Maverick fireworks did the fireworks at 8 p.m. off Main beach, a great display to cap off a perfect day!

We could not do this without our volunteers and we have some of the best ones around! Thank Yous to All volunteers, donors, and visitors who came out to play!
