Wearable Art: Fernie Spinners & Weavers Guild

The Fernie Spinners and Weavers Guild is an active and supportive group of people excited to share their love of fibre arts.

The Wearable Art exhibition is the culmination of work following a captivating workshop with Anita Luvera Mayer, an inspirational Seattle based fibre artist. Anita’s work concentrates around garments made from simple shapes such as rectangles, taking inspiration from ancient cultures around the world.

She taught the guild printing techniques, discharge techniques where the colour is removed from fibres, surface design and embroidery techniques. The guild has since been inspired to meet more regularly to explore the techniques from the workshop. This has fostered closer relationships, and has welcomed in new guild members.

The Fernie Spinners and Weavers Guild is one of the more active fibre arts guilds in the province, with members spanning from Alberta to Kimberley, and everywhere in-between! They focus on traditional techniques, such as felting, eco dyeing, spinning, weaving and braiding; all with a contemporary twist.

If you are interested in joining the guild on their fibre adventures, please contact Gayle at [email protected]
Please join the artists at their opening reception on Thursday, September 25 at 7 p.m. for refreshments. Exhibit continues until Monday, October 27.
