Fernie bakery chooses Sparwood as first step in expansion plan

Current investment hotbed Sparwood is proud to be the location for Loaf Bakery’s new venture.

SparwoodLoafStaffFernie-based Loaf Bakery opened its doors adjacent to the big green truck next to Highway 3 in Sparwood and is now serving espresso coffee, hot soups, freshly baked bread, sausage rolls, miners pies and a range of cakes and pastries.

The business is generating a high level of interest from the Sparwood ‘coffee connoisseur’ and has already started becoming popular with the various mine companies in the district for their lunch orders and catering.

Phil Gadd, owner of the Loaf said, “We’re going back to what we first started with in Fernie, with a small bakery that focuses on quality products to go. We identified that Sparwood was missing a local bakery and coffee shop so we’re trying to fill that gap. We were delighted with the way in which our business has been received in Sparwood; the district was really supportive and made the process of setting up and getting established very smooth.”

Sparwood is currently a focal point for investors in B.C. with hoteliers, restaurateurs, housing developers and mine support companies all vying to get in on the action.

Baking will take place at the Loaf’s new location with a staple product being traditional miner’s pies known as Cornish Pasties. Deeply rooted in British mining history, they were first created at the turn of the century by miner’s wives. Wives made the half moon shaped pastry with a thick crust full of rich meat stew that could stay warm for hours as a meal their husbands could eat working underground without the need for utensils.

Lois Halko, Mayor of Sparwood said, “We are welcoming to businesses that want to join our community. Loaf is a great addition and one that we have welcomed with open arms, it’s great to have another high quality place to eat and we expect it to be a real draw for travelers to stop on their journeys. Sparwood is building real momentum and we rarely see a week go by without another business making enquiries about locating here.”
