ANNA BOLENA
by Gaetano Donizetti
Italian with English subtitles, 2011, 3:14
starring Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanca, Ildebrando DāArcangelo
Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus
conducted by Evelino Pido
Ā In Donizettiās opera, the story of Ann Boleyn develops like a Greek tragedy where there is no possible escape from the trap that will close on Ann and her fate has been decided.
Ā Superstar Netrebko displays all her vocal skill and dramatic talent as Ann, Elina Garanca gives a superb and subtle interpretation of the role of Jane Seymour, and DāArcangelo is a suitably evil Henry. This production from Vienna relies on minimalist sets and sumptuous costumes to tell this most compelling and tragic story.
