Area F Volunteer of the Year honoured

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) paid tribute to Electoral Area F Volunteer of the Year Norbert Schab at the Electoral Area F Town Hall Meeting last night in Fairmont.

“Norbert has been a member of the Wasa Lions Club for 51 years and has given hundreds of hours of time to this community,” says Electoral Area F Director Wendy Booth. “He played a key role in the new “Lions Den Project,” has been on the Fairmont Community Association, is President of the Trails Society and Summit Trail Maker Society, sits on the Area F Advisory Planning Commission, and so much more. He also gives in many quiet ways – shoveling for his neighbours, mowing lawns, and even updating the messages on the sign in Fairmont Hot Springs. There really isn’t a part of this community his volunteerism hasn’t touched.”

There were 50 people in attendance at the meeting, which also featured an update from Director Booth on the projects and services she and the regional board have been working on, along with presentations from the RDEK on the current emergency response and Financial Plan.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Mainroads were in attendance and provided an update on their plans for culvert replacement and ditching in Fairmont this year, the first in what is a three-year plan. Work on the ditching and high priority culvert replacement is set to begin tomorrow.

A Town Hall meeting had been scheduled for tonight in Edgewater and on Tuesday, July 2 in Windermere; however, both have been postponed as RDEK staff continues to deal with the regional flood response.
