At 10 a.m. on Feb. 15, Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment responded to a fatal accident on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park (KNP), four kilometres east of Vermilion Crossing.

A west bound Hyundai Accent, driven by a 24-year-old female from Calgary, with a male passenger, was observed to apply brakes on a snow covered road with slush resulting in the vehicle losing control entering into the oncoming lane.

A semi driver going east bound moved to the right in an attempt to avoid the accident.  The Hyundai went head on with the semi resulting in the death of the female driver.

The male passenger who appeared to be around the same age was transported to Calgary’s Foothills Hospital.

Southeast District Traffic services responded and has taken over the investigation assisting the local Coroner.

Due to a lengthy investigation, closing the highway for 14 hours, traffic was diverted to go through Golden.

The investigation is continuing.

Our thanks to the civilian witnesses on scene who gave immediate first aid treatment to the male passenger.

S/Sgt. Marko Shehovac,

Columbia Valley RCMP
