City hit by multiple water main breaks

A failure in a pressure reducing station overnight Saturday is believed to be the cause of up to eight water main breaks across the city today.

The Pressure Reducing Station Failure is affecting 100 residences across the community and the cause of large sinkhole.

Staff with Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services began receiving calls from the public around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Two Public Works water crews are out starting on two repairs with a third crew set to come online later this morning. Crews are starting on the 1200 block of 3rd Avenue, the 200 block of 9th Street and the 100 block of 2A Street. It is expected that water service will be restored to most affected residents by the end of the day today or into tonight.

As the water service is restored and the water turned back on, many residents will experience dirty or discoloured water. This is due to the water pressure stirring up sediment in the water lines. The discoloured water is not a health concern. Simply run your cold water tap until the water runs clear.

One of the water main breaks has created a large sinkhole on 3rd Street South at 20th Avenue (pictured above) near the former Muriel Baxter School site. The area has been blocked off and drivers are asked to please avoid the area and use an alternate route.

The City of Cranbrook apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused. Crews are working hard to restore water service to all the affected residents as soon as possible.
