Clock Tower Square project begins Monday
Construction and additional beautification of the Clock Tower Square on Baker Street in Cranbrook is set to begin on Monday.
Public Works crews will begin by removing the existing paving stones, trees and portions of city sidewalk along Baker Street Monday morning, so crews can replace a water main that runs under the square along with other infrastructure that needs to be replaced.
Public Works will ensure access to both the Royal Bank and the businesses in the SunLife building on the corner of Baker Street and 9th Avenue South remain available to the public.
The public is advised that the area may be quite congested and parking will likely be limited due to equipment and staff. Residents are asked to please respect and follow all fencing, barricades and signage in place for the duration of the work and to please avoid walking on the road to get around the construction work.
The Clock Tower Square project is expected to continue and be completed next spring. Decorative concrete and walkways will be poured along with the new landscaping with additional trees, shrubs, perennial planters, grassed areas and irrigation system, along with a drinking fountain.
The Clock Tower Square will also see the installation of benches, some tables and garbage receptacles and also includes the installation of lights similar to those currently in place along 10th Avenue between Baker Street and 1st Street South.
The City of Cranbrook apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciates the patience and understanding of residents, customers and the businesses affected by the project.
The project was identified as a 2014 capital project in the recent Council budget deliberations and has been budgeted at $200,000, of which $150,000 was carried forward from 2013 and an additional $50,000 is coming from surplus.
Meantime, the existing paving stones, once removed, will be temporarily stored at the Public Works gravel pit on Cobham Avenue. If the public wishes to use them they may be picked up there. Residents will have to load the stones themselves as there will be no machinery available to help with the loading.
