Council sets table for 2016
City of Cranbrook council set the table for 2016 during the final regular meeting of 2015 last night, establishing committee and acting mayor appointments and when meetings will be held in the upcoming new year.
Council unanimously approved the following schedule for 2016 Acting Mayor Appointments during the absence, illness, or other disability of the mayor:
– January and February 2016: Councillor Wes Graham;
– March and April: Councillor Danielle Cardozo;
– May and June: Councillor Ron Popoff;
– July and August: Councillor Norma Blissett;
– September and October: Councillor Isaac Hockley;
– November and December: Councillor Tom Shypitka.
Council approved the following appointments for the statutory, select, and standing city committees:
Advisory Planning Commission – Coun. Wes Graham and Coun. Ron Popoff;
Cranbrook Public Library Board – Coun. Norma Blissett;
Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee – Coun. Isaac Hockley and Coun. Graham;
Wellness and Heritage Committee – Coun. Danielle Cardozo;
Personnel Committee (Committee of the Whole) – Mayor Lee Pratt;
Cranbrook History Centre – Coun. Blissett;
Community Poverty Reduction Strategies Initiative – Coun. Popoff;
Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce – Coun. Popoff;
Ktunaxa Kinbasket Treaty Advisory Committee – Coun. Popoff; Mayor Pratt as alternate;
Regional District of East Kootenay Board and Kootenay East Regional Hospital District Board – Mayor Pratt and Coun. Tom Shypitka, with Coun. Graham and Coun. Popoff as alternates.
Council also unanimously agreed to dissolve four city committees: Highway 3/95 Committee; Economic Development Committee; Environment and Utilities Committee; and Family and Community Services Committee.
City Corporate Services explained in a report to council those committees are not statutory and had been established under section 142 of the Community Charter at the discretion of previous councils.
“Since these committees were inactive in 2015 and there were no referrals from council justifying the need for a committee, if council does not wish to make use of these four committees in the future, the best practice is to dissolve the committees,” Corporate Services’ report outlined, adding, “The terms of reference for the committee will remain at this time in case there is a need to reactivate the committee.”
