Cranbrook RCMP investigate homemade explosive
On July 7, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Cranbrook RCMP were called to the 700 block of 21st Avenue in the city for a suspicious incident.
Upon arriving the police found that some unknown person(s) had constructed a homemade device inside a glass rum bottle, which exploded, sending shards of glass over a 50-metre diameter. Left at the scene was a two-litre bottle of Dr. Pepper half full of water. The remnants of the explosion, which were still foaming, indicate that the person(s) responsible made a chemical bomb of some sort and police believe the contents to be extremely corrosive. The RCMP is looking for any witnesses to this incident or anyone who may have information about it.
The RCMP would also like to warn residents of Cranbrook to be wary of any incidents of this nature and if you witness or come across the remnants of this type of activity, please don’t touch it and call the police or fire department right away.
If anyone has any additional information about this or any other crime they can call the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 or East Kootenay Crimestoppers (1-800-222-TIPS).
Cpl Pat Prefontaine,
