Crash kills power for chunk of city
An early morning crash on the Highway 3/95 strip (Cranbrook Street) in Cranbrook knocked out power in the northeast corner of the city.
A black 1999 Ford F350 pickup collided with a hydro pole that collapsed onto the truck, creating the power outage affecting Cranbrook residents throughout the day. The driver of the vehicle left the scene on foot and could not be located by police. Investigation revealed the vehicle had been stolen from a nearby motel.
East-bound traffic was diverted down Theatre Road but the west-bound portion of the highway is open.
BC Hydro does not expect to have power restored until about 4 p.m. today (Dec. 12).
The accident occurred at 5:02 a.m. this morning and crews have been working since to clear up the highway and restore power.
There were no injuries as a result of the crash.
The investigation is ongoing and police request anyone who may have witnessed the crash or have information relating to it call Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 or Crimestoppers at 1800-222-8477. Information can also be relayed via web or text based tips with details on canadiancrimestoppers.org
