Drugs, driving and winter tires
Drugs
On Wednesday, Oct 24, members of the Kimberley/Cranbrook RCMP arrested and seized a quantity of cocaine. The subject had been arrested and charged a few weeks ago when he came to the officers’ attention again. Upon his arrest officers seized cocaine and subsequent to that a search warrant was executed on his residence. More cocaine was seized from the Halpin Street house. In all 20, one-gram packages of cocaine were seized. Users often buy cocaine in 0.5-1 gram quantities, so this seller had a good supply. In addition three cell phones were seized something officers find common with those involved in the drug trade.
The Kimberley resident is facing several charges and has outstanding warrants from Alberta. He went before a Judge on Oct 25 and was remanded in custody to appear again on Monday Oct 29.
Driving
A lot of people question police doing traffic enforcement. They seem to believe police need to get out and investigate real crimes. Well lots of times that happens through a regular traffic stop. Last weekend an officer stopped a young lady for speeding. Right off, he noted signs of impairment. She was given a roadside test and ended up losing her license for three days. In addition there was open liquor in the vehicle; another charge. And the passenger was found to have marijuana in her possession. No charges were laid with respect to the marijuana but it’s still illegal. One traffic stop, multiple offences.
Winter tires
There is a lot of confusion of the government’s winter tire requirements. Regardless of the law, I strongly suggest driver purchase proper winter tires. Over my career I’ve driven thousands of kilometers through some pretty bad conditions. I have also attended hundreds of collisions in these conditions. Purely from experience I say buy proper tires. They do make a difference! Keep your family safe.
