BC SPCA East Kootenay Happenings

The power of animals: Seniors light up when the BC SPCA East Kootenay visits

Coco is a Labrador cross. She is a shy girl who needs gentle handling. Coco walks well on a leash and relaxes when she is away from the shelter. She has not spent much time inside but seems to be happy in her inside kennel here at the shelter. Coco is looking for a home where she is the only dog and where the family can spend time getting to know her at her pace.

They might not interact much with anyone anymore. They might not remember the names of their spouses or closest relatives. But when they pet a happy dog, or when a kitten is placed in their lap, the change in the seniors – many of whom have dementia, Alzheimer’s and other ailments – is truly something special.

“The Cranbrook BC SPCA has been bringing joy to the seniors of our local community through spreading the love of animals,” said BC SPCA East Kootenay Branch manager Brenna Baker, noting how she and staff member Dusty Cleland take their BC SPCA-adopted dogs to Joseph Creek Care home to visit residents, and Pines Care Home in Kimberley also visit the shelter with a bus full of senior residents.

“To see their reactions is priceless. We know that animals can be therapeutic, but to see it in action is amazing – one time, we were visiting a resident who never spoke or showed any form of emotion whatsoever, but when Hunter and Boomer (a border collie and Pomeranian) showed up, her eyes lit up and she started making sounds! It brought tears to the care worker’s eyes, as she said she had never seen this before and what amazing progress it was.”

Erma is a beautiful five-year-old girl. She is a little shy at first but doesn't take long to warm up to people. Erma loves her pets and a good brushing! She would do best in a single cat home and preferably a home with older children.

Cleland’s dogs, as well as Baker’s own Moocho, a golden retriever, are popular in the care facility visits and on the bus – and sometimes, they’ll bring kittens onto the bus for the facility’s residents to cuddle, Baker noted.

Often, the sight of the animals and petting them will trigger memories in residents whose memories don’t work as well as they used to, and they’ll start telling stories of childhood pets they had, and they’ll remember the names of their beloved pets and the love they had for them, Baker says.

“Our dogs are amazing and seem to know that they’re there to do a job – they seem to sense if someone is sad or lonely, and that’s the person they’ll go to. It’s almost magical,” she says. “One man couldn’t say anything and couldn’t move, but when Moocho went over and put his nose right under his arm, his eyes lit right up! Their recreational therapists are constantly amazed at the change animals bring in some of the residents.”

George is a wonderful snugglebug who is looking for his forever home. He is a little shy and takes a while to get used to new situations. He likes to have hiding areas to feel safe. He enjoys hiding his head in your arms. If you are patient, gentle and live in a quiet home, this cat will certainly come out of his shell for you!

Baker is hoping to develop the program into something much larger, and plans to apply for funding to hopefully, run a pilot program as early as next spring. Volunteers for such an endeavour are always welcome as well, she notes.

“I really believe that animals are so important to the well-being of seniors,” Baker says. “They can’t have pets in the facilities they’re in, but their reactions speak so much louder than words, and make it so worthwhile.  A lot of residents had pets in their pasts so they all remember so many stories of their own animals when we visit.  It is so awesome to hear them speak with so many happy memories.  It is also therapeutic to both Dusty and me as well.”

PetSmart funds are still available to help spay/neuter your cats and kittens!

Do you have a cat or kitten that needs to be spayed or neutered?  We can help you out!  Please call the shelter or stop by to pick up a voucher.  We ask for a $40 donation to assist with the cost of the program if you are able to afford it.  Funding is very limited now so don’t wait. Once this grant is depleted you will have to go on a waiting list until more funding comes available.

Hello! This is Harvey Birdman. He is a three-year-old Bull Terrier neutered male. Harvey's perfect home will be an experienced, active, and structured, that will give him unconditional love. Harvey is a very excitable boy with an abundance of energy, so he would do best in a home with older children who don't get knocked down easily. His dog socialization skills are a bit rusty, so he would be best suited in a home with no other dogs until he can properly behave around them. Harvey has a high prey drive, so a home with no small critters or cats would be best. Harvey is a very intelligent boy that is willing to please. As his new family and Harvey learn and grow together as a team. Obedience training may help you both find the right tools and skills to improve over all manners.

Hi there! This gentle old soul is a 11-year-old Pit Bull Terrier, spayed female, named Kattiara. Her perfect home would be a calm, quiet, and structured home that will give her the unconditional love that this sweet girl needs. Kattiara is a very lovable girl when given the chance she will crawl right up on to your lap. She is good with kids, but she would prefer a home with older children, as she a bit slow in her old age so the hustle and bustle of an active home would be overwhelming for her. Kattiara lived happily with another senior dog, so she wouldn't mind a companion, but she would prefer someone that fits her energy level. Kattiara can't wait to spend the remainder of her days cuddled up the your sofa with you. She looks forward to meeting you soon!
