Elkford supports South American program
The District of Elkford is taking part in a program that is helping local governments in Colombia and Peru deal with the impacts and benefits of mining and promote sustainable economic growth.
Sustainable and Inclusive Communities in Latin America (CISAL) is a five-year initiative that is funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, and implemented by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). The goal of the program is to support local governments in Colombia and Peru in their efforts to manage the impacts and benefits of mining development and to promote sustainable economic growth for citizens in Latin America.
In June 2015, the District of Elkford welcomed Colombian and Peruvian delegates of the project to our community as part of the first study mission of the program. Also in attendance were local representatives from Teck Coal Ltd., the District of Sparwood, the City of Fernie, and Regional District of East Kootenay Electoral Area A. The visit and meeting involved exchanging information and ideas between parties.
Since the first meeting in Elkford, both Councillor Ken Wildeman (pictured above) as Acting Mayor, and chief administrative officer Curtis Helgesen have visited Colombia to take part in various aspects of the program as a local government volunteer. All travel costs associated with these missions are covered by the FCM-CISAL program.
