Fernie taking part in national wave
The City of Fernie is taking part in a national ‘wave’ of plaque unveilings on August 22, as part of the 100th anniversary of Canada’s first National Internment Operations (between 1914 and 1920).
The anniversary is being held to mark the injustice experienced by Ukrainians and other Europeans during the Great War. The Fernie/Morrissey Internment Camp was one of 24 such camps set up in Canada during the First World War.
A plaque unveiling will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 22 at 11 a.m. at Dogwood Park/Leroux Ponds. Turn right at the bottom of the hill on 4th Avenue and proceed to the large memorial rock for the Fernie/Morrissey Internment Camp or follow the signs to Dogwood Park, located at 4th Street and 6th Avenue.
For more info on the Fernie/Morrissey Internment Camp contact the Fernie and District Historical Museum at 491-2nd Avenue or go here or read this story.
