Fire Extinguisher Education Night Tuesday
Members of the Hosmer Fire Department will be providing valuable training Tuesday night as they open the doors to the hall for an interactive training night.
âWe are holding a fire extinguisher training night and encourage everyone to come out,â said Elk Valley & South Country Rural Fire Service Deputy Chief Michael Hockley. âWe will be providing general information on the importance of fire extinguishers and then those in attendance will have a hands-on opportunity to use an extinguisher to put out a fire.â
The interactive training night is part of the ongoing Hosmer Fire Recruitment Drive; however, Hockley said the night is not just for those people interested in becoming firefighters with the Department. âHaving a fire extinguisher in your home and knowing how to use it is a critical part of any home safety plan and we hope to see as many people as possible come out for this free learning opportunity. Everyone is welcome.â
The Hosmer Fire Recruitment Drive runs through April 15 and the department is hoping to boost the number of firefighters up to a minimum of 15, from the current seven active members. So far, Hockley has received four applications but is hoping to see several more come in over the next two weeks.
âThe Hosmer Fire Department cannot continue operating without a strong core of firefighters. I know the community understands the value of the Department and Iâm hoping we receive several more applications before the 15th,â added Hockley.
No experience is necessary to become a paid-on-call firefighter with the Hosmer Fire Department and all training is provided free of charge. For more information on how to apply, contact Deputy Chief Hockley or Chief Dave Boreen at 250-429-3133 or visit the Hosmer Fire page on the RDEKâs website.
