Great turnout for Cherry Creek Falls celebration

On Sunday, May 26, the Meadowbrook Community Association hosted a celebration of the preservation of Cherry Creek Falls.  The weather cooperated and the falls were in their glorious splendor.

More than 100 people came to celebrate the prohibition on future mining on 400+ acres surrounding the falls and the intention of the Regional District of the East Kootenay (RDEK) to create a 40-acre day use only regional park.

Those attending the festivities enjoyed free food.  Of course the menu featured sausages and burgers from the Meadowbrook butchers: Cliff Wilson and Uwe Gwinner.  Overwaitea Foods generously donated the buns, condiments and soft drinks.

Community association president Bob Johnstone said, “The turnout shows how important it was to preserve Cherry Creek Falls for future generations.  Our association appreciates the support of the RDEK board of directors and Area E Director Jane Walter, and the advocacy by Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett and (recent Liberal Party candidate) Doug Clovechok.

Johnstone thanked the individuals and groups who donated, especially Columbia Basin Trust.

“Our fund-raising was going well but the $20,000 grant from CBT ensured we would reach our target by our deadline,” he said.
