Highway 3 closed after fatality accident
An early morning single fatality accident has closed Highway 3 east of Cranbrook.
Emergency crews were called out at 5:48 a.m. to an accident scene two kilometres west of Wardner.
Initial report states that the driver of a pickup truck swerved to miss a cow on the highway and collided head-on with a semi-trailer.
The vehicle was eastbound when the driver lost control and was struck by a westbound commercial vehicle. A small fire erupted but others managed to extinguish it.
Cranbrook RCMP and Southeast District Traffic Services report the deceased is a 44-year-old Cranbrook resident.
Traffic services along with a collision analyst and coroner are on the scene. The highway will remain closed until the scene examination is complete.
The estimated opening time of Highway 3 is 3 p.m. A detour is available via the Wardner-Fort Steele Road. Please take care if taking the detour as that road will be extremely busy with long weekend traffic.
