Investigation into Tuesday’s Baker Street fire concludes

The joint investigation conducted by Chief Wayne Price of Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services and Corporal Pat Prefontaine of the Cranbrook RCMP into Tuesday’s fire, which claimed four businesses in downtown Cranbrook has concluded.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature at this time. Evidence in the form of fire conditions and witness accounts indicate the possibility that the fire was of electrical origin, however the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

At 1:24 a.m. on Tuesday April 24, Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services received a call of a fire in a building located at 806 Baker Street, between 8th Avenue South and 9th Avenue South. Eighteen firefighters, including the Chief and Deputy Chief arrived on scene approximately 1:30 a.m., with two engines and a ladder truck. They rescued two residents from the rooftop of the now destroyed building.

There were no reported injuries. Crews are on scene cleaning up the site Friday afternoon. Cleanup of the property is expected to be finished over the weekend. A security fence is to be erected around the perimeter of the property.
