Jewett remains president of College of Physicians and Surgeons
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia has announced its 2014 elected officers and Executive Committee, effective July 1, and a Cranbrook resident will continue as president of the board.
Lawrence Jewett, MD, FRCSC has accepted his second term as president of the College Board. Dr. Jewett’s many credentials and achievements include chief of staff and chief of surgery at East Kootenay Regional Hospital, regional chief of staff, Interior Health – East Kootenay, and UBC clinical associate.
“The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia is a professionally led organization with a mandate to protect the public. We do this by making sure that physicians are qualified, competent and fit to practice medicine throughout their professional lives – from the time they are granted registration with the college, to the time they retire. This includes ensuring that physicians actively engage in lifelong learning through ongoing professional medical education. Board members take their role as governors of the profession very seriously,” said Jewett. “It is an honour to serve as president for a second term.”
Gerry Vaughan, MD was elected as vice-president and Anne Clarke, MD, FRCPC will serve as treasurer.
Dr. Vaughan runs a full-service family practice in Nanaimo. His medical credentials include having served as chair of Vancouver Island Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee and Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s chief of staff.
Dr. Clarke is vice-chair of the Fraser Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee and program medical director for Fraser Health Emergency Program. Her clinical work includes urban community hospital work and privileges as an emergency physician at Peace Arch Hospital.
Other members of the Executive Committee are Lori Charvat, LLM, Duncan Etches, MD and Michelle Corfield, DM.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons is the licensing and regulatory body for all physicians and surgeons in the province. Governed by provincial legislation, the college’s role is to protect the public by establishing, monitoring and enforcing high standards of qualification and ethical practice across the province.
