Kootenay watershed included in High Stream-flow Advisory

The BC River Forecast Centre is issuing a High Stream-flow Advisory for five major watersheds in the province, including the Kootenay River, thanks to recent warm weather.

“Several days of high temperatures has led to rapid melt of this season’s snow pack,” warned the BC River Forecast Centre this morning (May 8).

“River levels have been rising quickly in response to this melt. Current river levels are below levels of concern, however the weather forecast from Environment Canada is for steady increases in temperatures in the South Interior through Friday.

River levels are expected to continue to increase through the remainder of the week, reaching the highest levels late on Friday or into Saturday. With temperatures forecasted to ease slightly over the weekend, river levels may ease slightly into Sunday.”

The following watersheds are included in the advisory:

Moyie River, near its outlet with Moyie Lake.
Moyie River, near its outlet with Moyie Lake.

• Kootenay (including the Salmo, Moyie, and other small watersheds);

• Okanagan (including Mission Creek and other small watersheds);

• Similkameen (including the Tulameen River, the mainstem of the Similkameen, and tributaries);

• Boundary (including the West Kettle, Kettle, and Granby Rivers and tributaries);

• Thompson Region (including the Salmon River near Falkland, Coldwater River, Chase Creek, and other small watersheds).

The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and will provide updates as conditions warrant.
