Police and SAR search for missing snowmobiler after avalanche
On March 23, at 2:20 p.m. Cranbrook RCMP were notified by the Emergency Response Coordination Centre that a SPOT beacon had been activated by a group of snowmobilers in the Hellroaring Creek area.
It was learned that a group of seven snowmobilers were in the Hellroaring Creek area when an avalanche came down on the group after which one person was unaccounted for.
Rescue efforts by Kimberley Search and Rescue and both Cranbrook and Kimberley RCMP, were launched. Members of Golden Search and Rescue also attended.
One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and has since been released.
Rescue efforts have been hampered due to the dangerous conditions and have been called off for the night. Rescuers have moved off the hill and will go back at first light.
Hellroaring Creek area is southwest of Kimberley, near St. Mary’s Lake.
