Smoke haze thickens as heat returns

A thick smoke haze is drifting over Cranbrook and Kimberley and other areas due to wildfires in the region, as well as outside the East Kootenay.

A 180-hectare fire in the St. Mary Alpine Park, 40 km northwest of Kimberley, is zero per cent contained as of Sunday, August 2 at 11:09 a.m.

“This fire is being monitored by Wildfire Service personnel and depending on local weather patterns, smoke from this fire will continue to be visible; however, it is burning in a remote location and is not threatening any communities or structures,” BC Wildfire Service reports. The lightning caused fire was discovered on July 4. See approximate location of this wildfire on a Mapquest map.

There is also a small wildfire (.09 ha) northwest of Cranbrook (east of New Lake) that is believed to have been human caused.

And a fire in the Ward Creek area, east of Gilnockie Provincial Park, burning since July 21, is still active at about 110 ha.
