Young skier killed in accident at Panorama
A 12-year-old skier from Saskatchewan was killed this morning in an accident at Panorama Mountain Village.
Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment was informed at about 10:30 a.m. by Panorama Ski Patrol of a serious accident on the ski hill involving a 12-year-old female from Saskatoon, skiing on a run called Millennium with family and friends.
“The young girl was skiing ahead of the group when she lost control and went into the tree line. A number of skiers in the area who witnessed the accident, as well as the ski patrol, attended to provide assistance,” reported Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment NCO S/Sgt. Marko Shehovac.
A helicopter arrived on scene and transported the injured youth to Invermere and District Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Family and friends are being assisted by Victim Services.
Panorama Mountain Village CEO and President Steve Paccagnan stated, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family. This is a tragic accident and we are doing everything we can to assist the family during this trying time. We are all deeply saddened by this event and I want to thank the entire Emergency Response Team for their quick response and professionalism. They did all they could to save this little girl.”
Conditions on the mountain at the time of the accident were overcast with light snow; and visibility was good. The young girl was wearing a helmet at the time, police note.
Columbia Valley Detachment will be assisting the Coroner’s Office in the investigation.
