Area G Director speaks to Brisco Mill fire

Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area G Director Roberta Schnider is offering her support to all those who have been impacted by the Brisco Mill fire Nov. 7.

“There are no words to adequately convey the impact of this fire,” said Schnider. “The mill is a
major employer, not just in Brisco, but surrounding communities and my heart is with everyone who has been impacted.”

The fire broke out late Thursday night on the mill site, which is outside a fire protection service area and was responded to by the RCMP, who are the lead agency in areas without fire
protection.

RDEK emergency personnel were made aware of the fire and ensured RCMP had engaged with the Office of the Fire Commissioner and Ministry of Environment. Officials on scene confirmed there was no risk to life safety and residents were safe to be in their homes or
on their properties.

“I recognize there will be many questions as the full extent of the impact becomes clearer,” added Schnider. “While we don’t know what is ahead, I do know the incredible heart and sense of community in Area G, and I have no doubt we will rise up in support of all those who’ve been impacted in whatever way we can in the days and weeks to come.”

The investigation into the cause of the fire will be led by the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
