Bears observed at the Fairmont Transfer Station
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) reports bears were seen in the Fairmont Transfer Station today (Sept. 16) and is asking the public to help discourage them from being habituated to the site.
The RDEK shared some important tips:
- Please ensure the Fairmont Transfer Station bin doors are properly closed after disposing of garbage.
- Please put EVERYTHING in the bin – do not leave anything on the area outside the bins as these can all be attractants for their curiosity (even if there is no food in them).
- Avoid any spare bins that may be on site. These are not for public use. The contractor sometimes drops the next bin on site (in preparation to switch out the bins) and people have been accessing these bins and leaving the doors open.
Signage will be posted on site and the RDEK is working to ensure there are no other attractants on the site.
“We ask for the community’s assistance in ensuring the bin doors are used properly – and are closed after each use,” the RDEK noted.
