New mayor coming for Canal Flats

The Village of Canal Flats is going to have a new mayor after the Oct. 20 municipal election.

Two-term mayor and council member since the village incorporated in 2004, Ute Juras has announced she is not seeking re-election.

Now a resident of Invermere, Juras has said she is thinking about running for a council seat with the district this October.

Juras took to Facebook yesterday to thank village residents for their support over the years.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing that I will not be running for Mayor of the Village of Canal Flats in this year’s municipal election in October. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in Canal Flats for the support you have shown me in my time on council. It has been an honour and a privilege to serve you in the past 14 years, first as councillor, then your mayor as well as representing you on the Regional District of East Kootenay board,” she stated.

“Canal Flats is about to enter in a new and exiting era and I am confident that the groundwork this council has laid will assist the next mayor and council in moving forward. Be sure to embrace a new and exciting future, but never forget who you are because that is what makes this tiny town with the big heart so special,” Juras concluded.
