Climbing wall reopens to public at JA Laird
Rocky Mountain School District (SD6) is excited to announce that the climbing wall at JA Laird Elementary School in Invermere is now open for public use.
After a prolonged closure due to COVID and insurance matters, a creative solution was developed with members of the public to reopen the climbing wall.
âCommunity use of the climbing wall was halted during COVID,â stated SD6 Secretary Treasurer Alan Rice. âAfter the district reopened community use, the operators of the climbing wall were unable to source insurance. The districtâs liability insurance provides coverage for school sanctioned events, which includes clubs, sports or other activities outside of regular school hours.
âHowever, the district requires proof of insurance for all non-school sanctioned events for use by employees, other youth groups, community/non-profit groups, or commercial users. Getting insurance in place for non-school sanctioned climbing took some time and creative thinking with our community partners.â
The district worked with Herb Weller, Jack Caldbick and Julie Beauchemin to determine alternative options to allow public access to the climbing wall. A society was created and has entered into a license of occupation with the district.
Insurance has been obtained by the society which will allow for community use of the climbing wall.
Herb Weller has been a determined advocate for the community. âThe climbing wall has been a vital part of the community since 2002. It is awesome to have it open again for everyone to enjoy,â he said.
The district wants to extend gratitude to Herb, Jack, and Julie who have worked tirelessly with the district to find a collaborative solution.
Hours of operation:
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.
