Columbia Valley RCMP Report

By Sgt. Darren Kakuno

This past week, October 3 through October 9, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 69 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

Polite gesture leads to transport crash near Brisco

On Wednesday, October 5 at about 4:30 a.m., emergency crews responded to a single vehicle commercial transport truck rollover on Highway 95 near Brisco. A witness reported the commercial transport truck pulled off to the side of the road to allow another commercial transport truck to pass and in doing so, drove onto a soft shoulder and rolled the truck onto its side. The driver was not injured.

Cranbrook man arrested after stolen vehicle discovered in Radium

On Wednesday, October 5 at about 1 p.m., an officer conducted queries on a silver Dodge Caravan parked at a hotel on Highway 93 in Radium Hot Springs and discovered it had been reported stolen out of Cranbrook. The officer arrested an adult male who was observed walking away from the van. The Cranbrook man was released on conditions to attend court on a later date.

One person injured in two-vehicle crash that closed parkway Oct. 6

On Thursday, October 6 at 10:30 a.m., emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 93 near Simpson River in Kootenay National Park. Witnesses reported the driver of a Ford F150 pulling a travel trailer swerved in an effort to avoid a collision with a northbound Chevrolet Malibu that had crossed the centre line. The Malibu sideswiped the truck causing significant damage to the car and resulting in the truck and trailer going off the road. The driver of the car was transported by air to an Alberta hospital with non-life threatening injuries while the passenger of the car and the driver of the truck were not injured. The highway was closed in both directions for several hours.

Motorcycle operator injured in crash near earlier two-vehicle crash in parkway

On Thursday, October 6 at about 11:30 a.m., the operator of a southbound Yamaha motorcycle lost control of his motorcycle and slid off the road when he attempted to avoid a lineup of traffic that was stopped on the road. Highway 93 was extremely busy at the time because of the two-vehicle collision that had occurred an hour earlier. The motorcycle operator sustained minor injuries.
