East Rogers Pass backcountry to close for avalanche control
Parks Canada is alerting backcountry enthusiasts that from November 7-9, the East Rogers Pass area will be closed in order for Parks Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces to test the Howitzers used for avalanche control in Rogers Pass.
Called a “verification shoot,” this drill ensures the 105 mm Howitzers are firing accurately to protect the highway corridor from avalanches this winter.
There are 270 predetermined targets to reduce snow loads in the 135 avalanche paths that can affect the transportation corridor. Hitting those targets accurately is essential for effective avalanche control.
This program protects highway and railway traffic from natural avalanches. It does not make slopes safe for skiers or snowboarders.
Anyone travelling into avalanche terrain should have the training, skills and equipment to assess the conditions and terrain, and self-rescue. You must comply with the Winter Permit System.
