Alzheimer Society hosting Awareness event in Invermere
January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. This month, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. wants to ensure that people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias know that they aren’t alone.
To increase understanding of dementia and the resources and services available, the organization is hosting a special event at Invermere Public Library on Tuesday, January 28 from 2 to 4 p.m.
More than 85,000 people in B.C. are living with dementia and that number is expected to triple by 2050. “Receiving a diagnosis can feel overwhelming,” said River woods, the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s Rural and Remote Coordinator. “We want to remind people that while there may be no roadmap for living with dementia, we can be your guide.”
The event will feature a workshop on brain health with a question-and-answer session. Participants will have the opportunity to share their insights into the kinds of dementia support that would have a real impact in rural and remote communities like Invermere, where the number of seniors is already high and growing fast despite a lack of crucial services like consistent transportation, assisted living and long-term care homes that people affected by the disease rely on.
“We know that living in rural and remote communities can be challenging for people affected by dementia and we want them to know that support is available,” said Woods.
The Alzheimer Society of B.C. connects people affected by dementia to support and education at any point in the disease through First Link dementia support.
People can connect to support by asking their health-care provider for a referral, by visiting their local resource centre or by calling the First Link Dementia Helpline at 1-800-936-6033.
