The District of Invermere is introducing a free yard-fuel chipping program this spring and is inviting residents to register for the service.

“In order to ensure successful FireSmart collection days in spring 2025, pre-registering will provide us with a better idea of how many homes would benefit from this free service,” the district noted.

Chipping dates are to be announced by April 1 and registered residents will be contacted via email when dates for their area have been selected.

Certain areas may be exempt to this program due to other funding avenues in their community, the district said.

How reducing woody fuels can protect your home:

• During a wildfire, burning embers can travel up to two kilometers on the wind and fall on your property.
• These blowing embers can ignite coniferous trees like cedars, junipers and other combustibles around the property, spreading fire to your home.
• Removing flammable materials and vegetation around your property will significantly reduce the chance of your home igniting.
