New faces will be coming to Invermere council

District of Invermere voters will be electing a new mayor on Oct. 20 and an almost completely different council.

Three-term Mayor Gerry Taft has opted to run for a council seat, leaving current Councillor Allen Miller and Mark Topliff as candidates in the mayoral election.

Along with lone incumbent Greg Anderson four other candidates are running for the four council seats: Kayja Becker, Shawn Ridsdale, Richard Unger and former Canal Flats Mayor Ute Juras, now an Invermere resident.

Voters have two choices for Invermereā€™s School District No. 6 School Board of Trustees seat: incumbent Denny Neider and Ryan Stimming.

Voters will be asked to answer two questions while voting:

1) ā€œDo you support a bylaw that bans plastic check out bags at all retail stores within Invermere?”

2) “Would you support the district purchasing the ā€œLake Windermere Resort Lands,ā€ located in Athalmer for an amount not to exceed $5 million?ā€

Incumbent councillors Paul Denchuk and Justin Atterbury, both finishing their second terms, opted not to run for re-election.
