Sound diversity coming to Invermere MusicFest
A diversity of sound is coming to the Invermere MusicFest this year, Friday August 18 and Saturday, August 19 at the Pynelogs Cultural Centre grounds/Kinsmen Beach.
Calypso, soul, funk, indie rock, electro-acoustic folk pop, R&B, Country and blue rock are on the sound menu for this two-day outdoor festival, nestled near the shore of Lake Windermere.
Here’s a look at the acts performing on the main stage…
Friday, August 18
Lake Stage
Chipko Jones: (Calypso) 6-7:15 p.m.
Chipko Jones is a Calypso/Roots/Reggae band based in the beautiful Okanagan region in BC, Canada. The project was formed in 2014 and includes members Anessa Lang and Darius Stone/Sax, Moot Murphy/Vox and guitar, Jen Millan and Jacob Soucy/Trumpet, Jacob Chatterton and Tim Osborne/Bass, Wendy Aronyk/Flute, Waseem Hakhroo and Chris Galardo/Drums and Bruce Collis on Conga and percussion. All the members met through the thriving music scene in the bands hometown of Vernon, which has a strong world music connection in the former Komasket Music Festival.
Boom Booms: (Soul & Funk) 7:45-9 p.m.
The musical brotherhood of Vancouver-based band The Boom Booms began in B.C.’s glamorous tree-planting camps. Planting trees by day and creating and performing music by night for their tree-planting posse was a typical spring season for the childhood friends. Once the season ended, they kept the momentum going by producing their very own neighbourhood block party. The “Boom Boom Block Party” became a summer highlight for East Vancouver residents for four years and raised over $20,000 for organizations such as Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA); Contributing to Lives of Inner City Youth (CLICK); and The Music Tree, a not-for-profit foundation that is dedicated to raising awareness of ecological community projects through fundraising concerts and events. Co-founded by Aaron Ross and supported by The Boom Booms, The Music Tree is committed to “greening” the planet by inspiring people to get involved in community building and self-sustainability.
The Wet Secrets: (Indie Rock) 9:30-11 p.m.
The Wet Secrets are a six-piece rock ‘n roll gang fuelled by a primal, fuzzy punk rock spirit, and steered by a love of slinky disco, art rock, 1970’s horns and AM gold song-writing. They have a well-established reputation for a phenomenal, sweaty live show.

Dandelions: (Electro-acoustic folk pop) 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Unencumbered by sonic rules, this husband and wife duo from Invermere has a sound that floats wherever it wants and plants its creative seed wherever it lands. Song-writing mastery tangled deeply within the bewildering chemistry of Ben & Shilo Cameron has lead to the creation of ‘Free Yourself,’ the band’s debut EP. Grinding synths, heavenly guitar, electronic beats and Grandma’s old accordion become the canvas behind set of rich story telling and intimate truths.
Questioning everything, a bold blind eye has been turned and every rule that exists has been ignored to produce ‘Free Yourself,’ a creative and emotional glimpse into the lives of a carpenter/producer and his mystical, acupuncturist wife. A rare fire burns within this bond and the music is a portal to centre of their unified universe.
Dawn Pemberton: (R&B/Soul) 6-7:15 p.m.
Vibrant, genuine and soulful Dawn Pemberton has deep musical roots that take her powerful voice from gospel and soul to jazz, funk and world music. She has become a staple of the Vancouver music scene and can often be found tearin’ it up as a vocalist, teacher, facilitator, choir director and “go to girl” for live performances and studio sessions.
A passionate songwriter and performer Dawn crafts her music with a sense of adventure, quirkiness, and serious groove and shapes it into her own unique and dynamic package.
Tight, expressive and bold, Dawn will hit you where it counts, funk you up and make you say “Go ‘head!”
Ridley Bent: (Country) 7:45-9 p.m.
Ridley Bent is back with his latest release Wildcard, the anticipated follow up of Rabbit on My Wheel showcasing the Western Canada based Country artist’s keen fascination for characters whose life on the straight and narrow rarely lasts past the nearest exit to a short, crooked road. Ridley Bent continues to weave tales of wisdom and intrigue with titles such as ‘Fill Yer Boots’ about a truck-driving card
player, and ‘Crooked and Loaded,’ written about a shoot out with a posse of outlaws. Produced by the John MacArthur Ellis and supported by an all star band of country music’s finest Wild Card will take your mind away and get your toes tapping as Ridley Bent does what he does best!
While much of Ridley’s new material is drawn from real life experiences he’s gathered up on the road, Wildcard still has its share of shady characters, jackknifing tractor-trailers and whiskey-fuelled bar fights. And for those who identify strongly with Ridley’s less reasonable characters – the ones who tend to prefer to stir things up with a pistol in one hand and a bottle in the other – there’s The Blood Trilogy. A companion EP recorded during the same sessions and co-written with Dunn – a highly satisfying three-song western epic of violence and vengeance informed by Ridley’s ongoing fascination with the bleak worlds of writers like John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy.
Blackie and The Rodeo Kings: (Blues/Rock) 9:30-11 p.m.
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings originally formed in 1996 when Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson came together to record what was suppose to be a one- off tribute album to the great Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett. At the time, all three members were deeply committed to burgeoning solo careers that they had no intentions of putting on hold, and had no plans to turn Blackie into an ongoing concern.
Now 20 years later, eight albums, one Juno award and several Juno nominations under their belts, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings have organically evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remains one of Canada’s greatest musical treasures.
