A Wild Weekend of Bees
Wildsight Invermere is excited to host renowned bee scientist Lincoln Best on July 7-9 as he presents information and activities on the biodiversity of bees in the East Kootenay.
On Friday evening, Lincoln’s one-hour public presentation will focus on native bees in the East Kootenay and how important they are for our local plants.
On Saturday and Sunday, participants of the bee workshop will explore bumblebees and native bees of the East Kootenay, including the unique bee, only found in Canal Flats. The workshop will look at biodiversity, plant ecology, habitat restoration, landscape design and conservation strategies we can implement to help our local bees thrive. Participants will enjoy hands-on activities included within the weekend presentation program. No background knowledge or experience required.
Lincoln has surveyed pollinator diversity in Western Canada for almost 15 years and produced new data for more than 600 species while discovering new species in Canada. Lincoln studied Zoology and Ecology at the University of Guelph and conducted graduate research at York University on the geographical distribution and genetics of the bees of British Columbia.
He has also led field teams through Central and South East Asia, observing native bees in more than 10 countries. Lincoln is passionate about floral/ bee relationships, especially the visitors to rare and unusual flowering plants in the Southern Interior.
