Kootenay and Yoho waterbodies closed

Parks Canada has detected suspected cases of whirling disease in the Kicking Horse River, Emerald River and Wapta Lake.

To prevent the spread of whirling disease, all waterbodies and shorelines in Kootenay and Yoho National Parks are closed until March 31, 2024.

Whirling disease is a known aquatic invasive species and can be fatal to young salmonids such as westslope cutthroat trout, Parks Canada outlined.
