Larry Halverson honoured with Nature Inspiration Award
A local legendary naturalist was recently honoured by the Canadian Museum of Nature with a lifetime achievement award.
Invermere resident Larry Halverson was Nov. 14 presented with the award at a special gala this evening recognizing winners of the national Nature Inspiration Awards for 2022.
These annual awards, now in their ninth year, recognize individuals, businesses, and not-for-profits that show leadership, innovation and creative approaches to sustainability in order to connect Canadians with nature and the natural world.
The 2022 awards covered seven categories: Youth (aged 17 and younger), Adult, Not-for-Profit (small to medium), Not-for-Profit (large), Sustainable Business, Community Action and Lifetime Achievement.
A jury selected the winners after paring down the applications to a shortlist of finalists. Winners receive $5,000 that they can âpay forwardâ to a nature-related program of their choice.
The Canadian Museum of Nature honoured Larry Halverson as the Lifetime Achievement recipient, noting, âThroughout his life, including 38 years as a naturalist with Parks Canada, Larry Halverson has created initiatives to protect nature.
“He co-founded the Wings Over the Rockies festival that has inspired similar festivals in North America. His kindness, humour and âjust do itâ attitude helped him raise millions of dollars from industry, business, and private sectors in aid of nature education and conservation.”
