What does legal trail access mean to you?
The Columbia Valley Cycling Society (CVCS) AGM is coming up on Tuesday, July 11, and we are calling on all past and current members to attend to help shape the future of the CVCS, and legal trail access in the Columbia Valley.
Countless hours has been spent by volunteers planning, mapping, gathering feedback and consulting government agencies, professionals and stakeholders in an attempt to secure some form of new trail development in the Columbia Valley over the past several years, yet it seems like we are no closer to seeing any new legal trails built than we were at the start.
A fundamental lack of support from key stakeholders has effectively halted our progress as a community who embraces cycling – and it shows. Only 20km of new trail has been added since the inception of the CVCS, and only in existing recreational areas. Simply infilling existing trail networks is not a sustainable growth strategy, and certainly does not meet the needs of our resident cycling community, nor our visitors who funnel significant amounts of tourist dollars into our local economy.
The potential for amazing trails is there, the demand for them is there, and the will and means to construct them is there, yet they are not being built. Something is wrong, and it needs to be addressed.
Please plan on attending the AGM this Tuesday, July 11 at the Invermere Lions Hall at the crossroads and get informed, and give your opinion on what the future of cycling in the valley looks like to you.
