Nourish Columbia Valley taking place Nov. 4
Canadians waste a shocking amount of food.
An estimated one-third of the food produced in this country every year is not used to feed people, and too often ends up in the landfill instead of on people’s plates. And that wasted food is needed by many Canadians.
One in six Canadians experience food insecurity, meaning that they do not have enough to eat. People are not food secure unless they always have access to safe, nutritious and culturally acceptable food to meet their dietary needs for a healthy life.
Many neighbouring communities are already recovering some of that food, and using it to feed people. They are collecting food destined for the landfills from stores, restaurants, institutional kitchens and other venues.
The surplus food is sorted and processed before being distributed to people in the community, primarily through social service networks. Food considered unfit for human consumption can be used to feed animals, or turned into compost. Only a very small amount of food ends up in the landfill.
We believe the time has come for the Columbia Valley to turn our energies and resources to a viable Food Recovery system. It would greatly benefit our community by feeding people, and reducing impacts on our landfill, bringing both environmental and financial benefits.
Take part on November 4 and join the conversation to bring about change.
