Progress leads to briefer Highway 1 closure

With progress made over the winter on the Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 project, the full closure of Highway 1 through the Kicking Horse Canyon will be limited to only five days this spring, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure reports.

That closure will occur from noon on Tuesday, April 11 until 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, April 15. All through traffic on Highway 1 from Golden to Castle Junction will be routed via Highway 93 to Radium Hot Springs and Highway 95 north to Golden. This will add as much as 1.5 hours of travel time.

At just five days, it will be much more limited than past closures, but it remains subject to weather and other conditions, the ministry said.

During the extended closures, arrangements have been made for brief, limited openings to allow escorted passage through the construction zone for school buses, local commuters, selected deliveries and exceptional, urgent local trips as outlined on the government’s Commuter Passes page.

Summer hours begin June 1 and continue into mid-September. During this period, there will be no daytime stoppages due to construction (except for possible momentary pauses to allow construction vehicles to turn or cross the highway).

Half-hour stoppages will still occur in the evenings, and overnight closures will continue except for Friday and Saturday nights. There will be no stoppages or closures during holiday long weekends.
