Awareness and protection efforts working

Help the Radium Bighorn Herd (HRBH) reported March 16 that it has been an incredible 37-day-stretch of no reported bighorn sheep highway mortalities in the Radium Hot Springs area.

“What a journey it’s been to get to this point after the traumatic string of almost daily deaths that grabbed the attention of every major media outlet in Western Canada. Thanks to this massive publicity and the support of numerous organizations and everyone following this Facebook page we saw real change take place,” the HRBH stated on social media.

“We can’t thank the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure enough for implementing seven-days-a-week Sheep Patrol on Radium hill! The daily presence of flashing trucks and extra wildlife signage has obviously made a huge difference and helped stop the slaughter we were seeing earlier this winter, along with the new driver awareness to #SlowYourRoll and drive cautiously and defensively through the Radium area to protect our beautiful wild herd.”

The sheep patrol is set to continue through to mid-April, as warmer weather sees the sheep moving away from the exposed grass on Radium hill and back to their other feeding ranges where the snow has melted and they’re able to access the grass once again.

“This also means the sheep are moving around and are once again back in the north Radium area (pictured above), which is the section of highway that handles the Highway 1 reroute so continuing to raise awareness is still important to keep the sheep safe especially when the full-time reroute kicks in in April,” HRBH said.

“We’re not done yet! A start date for construction of a wildlife overpass still hasn’t been announced and fundraising is still in effect to help make this happen! Donate to the fundraiser for the wildlife overpass for Radium hill and if you haven’t already buy your Slow Your Roll t-shirt or hoodie with proceeds also going to the fundraiser.
