Severe thunderstorm potential in valley today
Environment Canada this afternoon reported conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail and heavy rain in the north East Kootenay including Invermere.
“Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall,” Environment Canada stated.
Sticking with regional weather, heads up if you must head west on Highway 3.
Environment Canada this afternoon also reports there is potential for snow showers over Kootenay Pass from late this afternoon to late this evening, producing trace to two cm.
“A cool airmass remains over the B.C. interior today. Any heavier convective shower will lower the snow level to near Kootenay Pass this afternoon and this evening. Travellers are advised to adjust their driving over high elevation passes as weather conditions may change rapidly. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions,” Environment Canada said.
