Local area-filmed Hacksaw showing at Wilmer Community Hall – 2 p.m. Sunday, May 27

Imagine a runaway four horse chuck wagon careening through Wilmer, six boys on bicycles chasing after and flying off mounds of earth, men jumping off the old wooden Toby Creek Bridge to get out of the way, and you have as much dramatic action as seeing this same team in the final chuck wagon race before the crowds at the Calgary Stampede.

But before all that happens there is a fly-in fishing camp at Lake Enid (purported to be remote) where the guide Tim Andrews (Tab Hunter), the client Mr. Curtis and his daughter Sue Curtis (Susan Bracken) see a wild stallion. Sue becomes more interested in catching this wild horse than fishing and she manages to convince Tim that they should try.

Since a number of local people took part in the 1970 filming of this 1971 movie, the Windermere District Historical Society was thinking of adding it to their monthly old time film series ‘Movie Night at the Museum.’ However, they quickly noted that more people would be interested in seeing this film than they could accommodate in their mini-theatre. This joint project with the Wilmer Community Club allows the opportunity for more people to attend in their larger space.

The afternoon event will be more than just a 90-minute film. Still photographs will be used to identify known local people and locations before the movie begins. Afterwards unknown people and locations may possibly be identified by those in the audience.

Although some locals who participated in the filming are now gone, some who had their fifteen seconds of fame by being in the movie, or otherwise worked on it, or have stories about it, may be in attendance.

The Historical Society would like to document any information that might be offered so that decades from now this movie won’t be just a mystery to the valley residents of that distant future.

Admission is by donation with drinks and popcorn available.
