30th Ave. N dedication and extension moving forward

Following direction of council in early 2023, the City of Cranbrook has now acquired the final non-dedicated portions of 30th Avenue North officially transferred from the Province of BC as of the end of December 2024.

This acquisition addresses a historical oversight which occurred when the City of Cranbrook boundaries were expanded in 1970, but much of the existing section of 30th Avenue North between Kootenay Street and Stahl Road remained a separate lot owned by the Province of B.C. As of December 27, 2024, this entire section is now owned by the city.

Meantime, construction of the 30th Avenue North extension funded and overseen by the College of the Rockies is expected to continue in 2025 between Kootenay Street North and College Way.

This extension, being constructed to standards set by the city, is intended to be a public city road in the near future and is highlighted in the city’s major road network plans. The timing of completing the construction and opening the roadway for public use will be finalized at a later date.

The city has been working closely with the College of the Rockies and its engineering consultant to determine what safety improvements may be needed at the 30th Avenue North and Kootenay Street North intersection. This is especially important as any development occurs and as traffic activity increases on this roadway.
