A delightful glimpse into hedonistic pursuits
Cranbrook Community Theatre has done it again with its latest production, ‘Don’t Dress for Dinner,’ a comedic look at the perils of mistresses, marriage, deception, friends and the pursuit of hedonism.
First-time director Patrick Baranowski credits the exceptional script written by Marc Camoletti and adapted by Robin Hawdon, along with the hard work of his actors, for a heartwarming experience in the director’s chair.
“I had the fortune of performing as a cast member in a version presented in 2013 at Centre 64, Kimberley B.C. It was the most fun I have ever had, and it was in no small part due to the brilliant script,” he said.
A delightful ensemble cast consisting of seasoned professional Matt Van Boeyen as Bernard, Nikki Van Boeyen as Jacqueline, Brad McCue as Robert, Tessie Ward as Suzette, Stephanie Moore as Suzanne and Ben Phillips as George offer a glimpse of the chaos that ensues when a couple gets entangled in their extramarital affairs, one evening, at the same dinner party.
The web continues to grow thicker and thicker as each character further enmeshes themselves in a collective lie as the evening ensues.
Zany performances fit the script, bringing it to life in an entertaining collage of talent and a whirlwind of frenetic energy that livens up the stage, inviting the audience into a strange and hilarious world of adulterers trying to get off the hook and stepping further in it as their evening unfolds.
The set design, costumes, and lighting combine for a distinct and vintage ambience.
“I have had a unique vision for this play since my performance, and ‘Don’t Dress for Dinner’ celebrates the gone-by eras of classic stage and television,” said Baranowski.
‘Don’t Dress for Dinner’ is worth a look and will be at the Studio Stage Door Theatre for performances on Oct. 26, 27, 28 and Nov. 2 and 3.
