A perfect day for the first Alumni Softball game
June 28, what a day to play softball!
The sky was blue with a few wispy clouds, a hint of a breeze to cool the sweaty foreheads, the field was freshly decked out with white lime, it was the perfect weather day to hold the first Alumni Softball game.
Before the game, a short opening ceremony was held to welcome our spectators, introduce the teams and coaches and to have an opportunity to say thanks to two outstanding young women, Hailey Gibbon and Sakari Kerr (pictured above).
Their support, mentorship, coaching skills, role modelling, and willingness to help out was so gratefully appreciated by this coach. This was their last year in Minor ball, and as our Honorary Captains won the coin toss and earned home team status for the U17 team.
Let’s take a minute to elaborate on our spectators! We had softball players from the U13 teams, we had mothers bring their U7 daughters over to watch after their activities were over, we had family, we had friends, all in all we had a very supportive crowd!
Meet the teams, the U 17 Cranbrook Minor Girls Softball Lions Team Coached by Brandon Cavener, Kristin Palou and Sue Trombley (pictured above) versus the Alumni team coached by Cara Lazaar (pictured below).
How to describe the play-by-play action? Well, we saw fly balls caught, grounders picked up, throws to bases, slides into home plate, strike outs and through it all we could hear the cheers from the dugout and bleachers.
Alas our U17 softball girls didn’t win, but a good time was had by all. The Alumni team is excited to be our opposition next year too.
One last thing I would like to mention, although there was a fair amount of planning to put on this event, not everything goes off without a hitch. We were very lucky that one of our U17 players asked her Dad to be our umpire to fill in at last minute. Thank you Sophia and Dad, Tasy.
Watch for us next year as we promise you another exciting game.
