Bowen Byram seen as top defender for 2019 NHL draft

Cranbrook’s Bowen Byram’s meteoric season hit another height today as the Vancouver Giants defender has risen in TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button’s latest NHL mock draft.

Byram, still leading the Giants through the Western Hockey League playoffs, with 16 points in 14 games, was selected third overall by Button, behind Finnish sniper Kaapo Kakko and American offensive wizard Jack Hughes.

If selected third overall, Byram would be headed to the sort-of rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks.

“The Vancouver Giants blueliner is far and away the best defenceman available in this draft class. Chicago has loaded up on defence in the last two drafts, but Byram is too good to pass on,” Button noted.

Byram was selected sixth overall in Button’s post draft lottery mock draft on April 9.

Byram, second in playoff scoring in the WHL, and his Giants hold a three games to one lead over the Spokane Chiefs in the Western Conference Championship series.
