Capital works program progressing at great pace
Two major projects in the City of Cranbrook’s 2022 capital works program are complete, with a third major project set to close out over the next couple of weeks.
City staff provided council with a status update Monday night (July 11) on many of the projects, which are part of this year’s capital works program.
The overall paving program and the Mount Royal Phase 2 reconstruction are complete, with the 4th Street North reconstruction set to wrap up before the end of July. Curb, gutter and sidewalk has been installed, and the multi-use asphalt path prep is finished. Paving of the pathway is to begin July 14. Roadway grading and prep is well underway with paving of 4th Street North expected to start July 15 or 16. The final landscaping work and cleanup will follow shortly after.
Contractor preparation of Lagoons Cell One and the overall site preparation is underway with equipment and crew on location. The contractor is actively removing the diffusers and the lateral lines in cell 1 to make room for the desludging operations, which is to begin on July 11. Bypass piping installation should begin in middle to late August. The public is reminded that the odour around the lagoon site may be much more noticeable once the actual desludging work starts.
On the pressure, reducing valve (PRV) 8 reconstruction project at the entrance to Wildstone, above ground piping and station commissioning is set for the week of July 11. Minor water disruptions are expected to be brief during the station switch over. The public and the media will be notified ahead of the disruption. A larger shutdown is to be completed in the late summer or early fall to safely dismantle the old building. The public will be provided notice of this work well in advance. Concrete curb and sidewalk replacement will happen once the old building has been removed.
Gally Equipment Services is set to begin work on the 15th Avenue and 1st Street Joseph Creek Rehabilitation project starting Monday, July 18 with the removal of the invasive golden willows. Removal work will be followed closely by the channel reconstruction and the box culvert bridge replacement. Planting and staking the project with native plant species will happen in the early fall.
And the tender for the proposed Theatre and McPhee Roads intersection upgrade project closed on July 5. City staff are currently reviewing the bids. More information about this project will be coming later.
