College of the Rockies hosting spring STEM camps for kids

Students between the ages of six and 12 will have the choice of four different camps

College of the Rockies will help kids to have fun with science, engineering, technology, and math this Spring Break, with four STEM Camps held from March 14 to 18.

“We’re excited to invite some younger students to our Cranbrook campus to have fun while learning important STEM concepts,” said Dr. Paul Tiege, Manager, Applied Research and Innovation. “STEM-based education helps students to develop a variety of competencies, including creativity and the skills they need to become the innovators and inventors of tomorrow.”

The Junior Robotics and Stop Motion camp will be held at the college’s Cranbrook campus. Aimed at six- to eight-year-olds, this camp focuses on creative coding fun and will be introduced to the basics of stop motion animation through a mini film project.

Kids aged eight to 11 are invited to take part in Catapult Challenge, where through a game of Storm the Castle, they will be introduced to building devices that move. This camp will take place at the Cranbrook Public Library in the Manual Training Building.

The Environmental Outdoor Science Week promises to be great fun for kids aged six to 12 with an interest in learning more about the environment and how to protect it. This camp is held in conjunction with Blue Lake Camp.

And finally, for the math lovers, the Magical Math Camp for ages seven to eleven will include puzzles and problems, mysteries, and cryptography. A special guest from the Cranbrook Chess Club will also make a visit with games and lessons.

Each camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from March 14 to March 18 and will follow current Provincial Health Orders regarding masks.

The cost for the Junior Robotics and Catapult Challenge camps will be $495. The Environmental and Math camps will cost $395.

Subsidies may be available, contact research@cotr.bc.ca for more details.

Registration is now open for all four camps.  Learn more at: cotr.ca/STEM
