COTR students excel in nation-wide marketing simulation
College marketing students finished phase one in first and third place overall
College of the Rockies (COTR) second-year Marketing diploma students, Michelle Chan and Kathleen Faye Chu Nicdao, finished first and third, respectively, in the first stage of a nation-wide computer simulation. Over 600 university and college students from more than 20 post-secondary institutions across Canada are taking part in the simulation over the winter semester.
Using software created by Praxar, a pioneer in the world of business simulations, participants demonstrate their marketing prowess by identifying the needs of several market segments within the video game industry. Based on scenarios presented during the simulation, students make decisions that typically would need to be made over a five-year period regarding products, pricing, distribution, and promotion.
At the conclusion of each yearâs decision-making process, the software uses an algorithm to assign a share value to each competitorâs virtual business. Share value is determined through several factors including overall sales, income, and customer satisfaction. Chanâs marketing decisions in the âfirst yearâ led to the highest share value in the simulation with Nicdao receiving the third highest.
âSimulations like these are a great opportunity for students to put what theyâre learning in class into action,â said Darrell Bethune, Dean of Business and University Arts and Science. âMichelle and Kathleen are demonstrating the creativity and critical thinking skills that businesses want, and we celebrate their success.â
The full simulation will wrap up in April 2020, at the conclusion of the winter semester.
